A Weekend in Kentucky

RA and I had one last get-a-way before summer launches! We decided to make another trip to Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, KY and it was the best. We've been here before, back in 2010,  and we had so much fun this time; although the 850+ miles of driving in two days wasn't my favorite. But, we had a great time, just the two of us. :-)

A road trip with the Hawks isn't a road trip unless there's a stop at Waffle House...

After a 6.5 hour drive (I slept most of the way...I love a good nap) we stopped at a local antique mall before checking into the inn...

The dogwoods are still blooming in Kentucky!

A pretty view on the property of Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill...

Good afternoon, sweet horses!

And sweet cows...

The misty Kentucky countryside...

The Inn at Shaker Village - we stayed in the East Family Dwelling building on the top floor. The rooms are so simple and so peaceful...

Such a simple dresser and mirror...

Simple desk and lighting...

Simple bathroom...

Beautiful staircase and hardwood floors...

A gorgeous view from our room...

Amazing bath products...

Great key chain with a great view...

Simple and symmetrical...I love it!

East Family Dwelling information...

How the building originally looked when it was built in 1817...

After settling into our room we wandered across the property to the farm and said hello to the ducks and the chickens...

Home-grown vegetables!

Using an old stump as a planter...I really like this idea!

More herbs and vegetables being rooted...

Baby ducks!

Silly old goat...

More chickens...
Beautiful views of the Kentucky countryside...

We made some horse friends!

They were so sweet...

Piglets!

And mama pig!
More sweet goats that were talking to everyone who passed by...

The farm kitty...

More vegetable gardens...

View of the walking path through the property...

The Trustee's Table restaurant...

I LOVE this spiral staircase...

Dogwoods and rock walls outside of the gift shop...

Beautiful wood floors and more symmetry...

View out of the Trustee's Table...it was a little rainy, but not bad enough to ruin the walk around the property...

Um...I'll take one of EVERYTHING. How do you choose between these options???

We were in Kentucky and it was Derby Day, so I had a Mint Julep...

RA had the chicken + asparagus + sweet potato hash...

I had the traditional Hot Brown...

How both of our plates looked after dinner...to say we thought it was delicious would be an understatement...YUM!

Another beautiful view Sunday morning as we walked to breakfast...

You would think after that amazing dinner that we wouldn't want anything else to eat, but their breakfast selection was just as good!

Coffee, homemade biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs, bacon, cheese grits, and breakfast potatoes...

I could just look at the views all day...

Blue skies peaking out from behind the clouds...

So peaceful...

A muddy morning for the chickens and ducks!

East Family Dwelling...

We decided to wander to another part of the property and hike some of the trails. The stables were nearby...blue skies and an amazing building completely built by the hard-working hands of the Shakers...

Time to hike!

On the OTHER side of this river there's a beautiful waterfall. I wanted to go see it and fortunately had my boots on, but RA didn't have his on so he stayed on the bank while I trekked across the raging (HA!) water to view the waterfall...

Totally worth it!

It wasn't just ankle deep water...in some spots it was almost to my knees. My jeans were SOAKED!

About a mile and a half round trip hike and then we decided to stop on the side of the road and dry out a bit. RA wandered while I relaxed in the sunshine...

We headed back to the room, packed our bags, and checked out of the inn before heading into downtown Harrodsburg to the post office to mail a postcard to the boys...

Downtown Harrodsburg...

Quiet Sunday morning...

Lunchtime at a local family restaurant - it was really good!

Definitely not a Kentucky Wildcat fan, but mama wanted some chocolate...

We can't (literally...he cannot) make a trip without picking up a new piece of furniture or in this case a door. Cherry and heart pine that will be used as my new laundry room door. This is how we look going down the interstate EVERY TIME we travel...

We had a great time and I'm really thankful that my husband plans fun adventures for us to enjoy together. :-)
