10th Anniversary Trip - Day 5 and Day 6

Day 5 --- Kennebunk, ME and Portland, ME
Day 5 of our trip involved a road trip to Portland, ME, some good food, and beautiful sights.

Hot cup of coffee on the front lawn of the B&B...

Mr. Hawk negotiating an auction purchase...more furniture...what am I going to do with him?

The B&B has an on site quilt shop so while RA was on the phone I decided to roam around...

Beautiful handmade quilts...

Time for breakfast! Homemade granola and yogurt, apple fritter pancakes, chocolate crepes, and sausage. Y-U-M!

After breakfast we started our trek north to Portland. In Maine they have signs that say, "Watch for Moose in Roadway" --- my eyes were peeled trying to spot a moose (didn't happen...). We paid another $2 in tolls on the way to Portland.

First stop of the day Bug Light House...

It really is as short as it looks...

Tiny and oh so cute...

Looking toward Portland from Bug Light House...

We were close to the airport, so I snapped a quick photo of a plane taking off for RF and Ellis...

Two duck friends...

We then drove on to Portland Head Light House. Oh my goodness was it amazing.

Portland Head Light House on a clear, blue day...

Beautiful views of the rocky coast from the light house property...

So pretty...

Selfie!

It looks like a postcard, but seriously - I took this shot with my phone. AMAZING view!

We then headed into Portland to wander for a bit and our first stop was at the place noted to have the best whoopie pie in Maine - Two Fat Cats Bakery...

Yummy goodness...

Maine cookies..

All the pies. Give me all the pies...

It didn't look like this for long. RA and I both inhaled it.

Delicious!

We stopped at a local sandwich joint for a quick bite to eat for lunch...RA had a meatball sub and I had the chicken pesto Panini...

Rose bushes in the garden area where we ate lunch...

RA found a local architectural salvage store in Portland, so we had to stop in and see what they had...

Lighting...

Windows...

Door locks...

Metal letters and numbers...

Door knobs...

I could wander for hours...

RA bought some old wood for some of his woodworking projects and had to borrow a vintage hand saw to cut the boards so that they would fit in our car. Only with the Hawks do things like this happen...

Portland postcard...

We then wandered outside of Portland toward Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. Our route took us through another toll road. Another $1 gone...

One of the barns at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village...

Sweet sheep...

We decided to take the tour of the property and our tour guide was from Roswell, GA. Small world. This building is one of the workshops on the property.

Maine countryside...

Main dwelling house --- Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is home to the last two surviving Shakers in the world. This property is their home.

Looking toward the Meeting House and one of the old dwelling houses...

We then headed back toward Kennebunk (paying another $5 in tolls on the way home) and grabbed a quick dinner in the downtown area.

View from the restaurant...

Dinnertime!

Downtown Kennebunk, ME...

Planters of flowers everywhere!

Pretty pinks...

We love Kennebunk, ME!

Day 6 --- Kennebunk, ME and Acadia National Park (Bass Harbor, ME) --- HAPPY 37th BIRTHDAY, RA!

Today began early. SUPER EARLY. That clock reads 5:45AM. And it's light outside. Anyone else have issue with this? Although, I will give Maine a little credit - it was 55 degrees outside this morning. 55 degrees...in JUNE! RA commented that he had never experienced such cool temperatures on his birthday. Being summer babies it's always hot on our birthdays.

We left the B&B before breakfast, so RA made a stop for me to grab a pick-me-up for our day in Acadia National Park. Paid another $6 in tolls. UGH.

We then made a pit stop in Brewer, ME to pick up my anniversary gift - a 19th century blanket chest.

We made it to ACADIA!

Bass Harbor Lighthouse!

A fir tree...in JUNE!

Very pretty, but secluded light house...

RA did a little rock climbing...

Another lighthouse selfie...

We wandered off the beaten path for a while and found this beautiful Maine lake. It was so quiet and peaceful until I heard something that sounded like water bubbling up...

And this is what I saw. Crazy man here brought jugs to fill with genuine Maine lake water to use in his nightly tea. Good news --- he boiled it three times before drinking it. Bad news --- he's crazy.

Such a pretty view...

Nope he's not done filling up his jugs...

Now that he's got his genuine Maine water, he can sit down and enjoy the view...

We stumbled across a Civil War cemetery...

Post office time!

Postcard from Acadia!

We grabbed a quick Subway sandwich for a late lunch on the way back towards Kennebunk.

Not sure what they are, but these purple flowers were everywhere...

Very pretty...

Paid another $2 in tolls and then we stopped in Biddeford, ME to pick up the online auction purchase RA was negotiating the day before. We had to take my blanket chest out of the car to figure out how to fit the three new bookcases RA purchased...

OMG - what crazy people go on vacation and come back with a car packed like this? Spoiler alert --- the trip isn't over - there's more furniture to come...

Afternoon at the B&B...

We then wandered out to Cape Porpoise to see Goat Island Light House...

Goat Island Light House...

Boats anchored in the bay...

Shells everywhere!

Clam shells everywhere, too...

Lobster bouys...

Time for dinner at the Chowder House!

Clam Chowder and Fish and Chips for dinner...

Let's eat!

Sun setting over beautiful Maine...
